General.
What is CBD?
CBD stands for cannabidiol. It is a natural chemical compound derived directly from the hemp plant.
How does CBD work?
Please see our patient education page for details.
Recent science has found that the Endocannabinoid System (ECS)- responsible for regulating our bodies- does not just respond to endocannabinoids produced by the body, but also responds to external cannabinoids, like CBD. CBD acts upon CB1 and CB2 receptors located throughout the body to produce a variety of potential positive outcomes. CBD does not bind directly to either of these receptors but instead impacts them indirectly.
What can CBD do for me?
Research suggests that CBD may help with a variety of health conditions. However, determining what CBD product works best for a specific individual is difficult since each person’s genetics and endocannabinoid system is unique. Ideally, each person should be “matched” with the cannabinoid and terpene profile that best fits their condition and desired outcomes.
Is CBD addictive?
No, CBD is not addictive.
How much CBD should I take?
Please see the delivery methods and dosage page for details.
We recommend a “low and slow” process to determine optimal dosing. In other words, start with a low dosage and work up to a higher dosage to determine what works best.
Does CBD have any side effects?
Please see our Side Effects and Drug Interaction page for details.
CBD is generally safe to take, but there are possible side effects including drowsiness and other changes in alertness; digestive issues, such as diarrhea and decreased appetite; and changes in mood, such as irritability and agitation.
Can I take CBD with my medications?
We always recommend that individuals consult with their primary care physician before using any CBD product. This is especially important if the individual takes a regulatory medicine, such as a blood pressure, blood thinner, blood sugar, or anticonvulsant medication.
Do I need a prescription to purchase CBD?
Hemp-based CBD products may be purchased anywhere in the United States without a doctor’s prescription.
How long does it take for CBD to work?
There are many factors that affect how long it takes CBD to work, such as an individual’s metabolism and tolerance/experience with CBD. The manner in which CBD is used, e.g. topically, sublingually, etc., also plays a role.
How long does CBD stay in the body?
CBD does not stay in the body for a long time. CBD is typically “flushed” out of the body in 5 to 6 days.
How long do the effects of CBD last?
Again, this depends on the manner in which CBD is used. In general, the effects of CBD can be felt for approximately 2 to 6 hours.
What are terpenes?
Terpenes are essential oils found in plants. Terpenes are what give CBD products their distinct aroma and flavor. Terpenes also have beneficial effects and work synergistically with cannabinoids like CBD. This relationship is called the “entourage effect.”
Why does CBD affect people differently?
First, CBD can differ in many ways. Second, people have different chemical makeups and differ in countless other ways. Significant factors that affect how CBD will affect an individual include age, weight, gender, lifestyle, and medical history.
Can I take CBD during pregnancy?
We always recommend that individuals consult with their doctor before taking CBD. This is especially important during pregnancy.
What is the best way to use CBD?
CBD is available in many different forms. An individual’s choice may depend on lifestyle, personal preferences, and desired outcome.
Is CBD "natural"?
Yes. CBD is 100% naturally occurring chemical compound that is derived from the cannabis plant.
Are there studies on CBD?
Yes, hundreds of studies have been carried out on CBD. Project CBD is a great resource.
How is a CBD tincture taken?
CBD tinctures are taken by placing a dose under the tongue (i.e., sublingually) where it is absorbed through the mucous membrane in the mouth.
What is the entourage effect?
The “entourage effect” is the synergistic relationship of naturally occurring compounds found in the cannabis plant. Cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids derived from the cannabis plant have been shown to work better when they are taken together as opposed to in isolation from one another.
What is the Endocannabinoid System?
The Endocannabinoid System (ECS) acts as a homeostasis regulator to maintain the body’s natural balance.
Are your products laboratory tested?
Yes. All our products are tested for cannabinoids profiles, pesticides, heavy metals, and mold. Please see our lab testing page for batch reports.
What does CBD taste like?
The taste of CBD can vary widely depending on the carrier oil, terpenes, and flavoring of extracts added to the oil.
Can I take too much CBD?
Probably not. However, taking too much CBD can lead to sleepiness and may not provide greater benefits than smaller dosages. More is not always better.
Is CBD safe for pets?
CBD is safe to use for pets, but their dosage will likely be much smaller than for humans.
Legal.
Is CBD legal?
Yes, the 2018 Farm Bill made CBD with a tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) concentration of not more than 0.3% legal in all 50 states
Will CBD make me "high"?
CBD is a non-intoxicating component from industrial hemp, which may not contain more than 0.3 percent of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). There is no “high” or euphoric effect as a result of using hemp-derived CBD.
Will CBD make me test positive on a drug test?
Hemp-based CBD products are manufactured from hemp plants that contain no more than 0.3 percent THC. Accordingly, there may be trace amounts of THC in CBD products which may result in a “false positive” on a drug test. This is true for any product made from hemp. Individuals who have a significant concern about drug testing should speak with their employer or doctor before use.
What is the difference between hemp and cannabis?
CBD comes from the hemp plant. Hemp belongs to the same family of plants as cannabis but has different qualities. Hemp plants are specifically grown to have very low levels of THC if any at all.
